October 4^th, 2011

Our meeting took place at the Newton County Extension Center.  The meeting was called to order at 6:30 pm by President Linda Arment.  There were 22 members present. 

SECRETARY’S REPORT: Minutes from September’s meeting were made available to members via the website and e-mail.  A motion was M/S/C to accept the minutes. 

TREASURER’S REPORT: Due to Donna’s absence the treasurer’s report was unavailable.

OLD BUISINESS:  Sherry McBride thanked everyone that participated in Prairie Days and commented how knowledgeable members were about native plants. 

John Hobbs reported that we have 14 new people attending the master gardener’s class at the Pineville extension center.  Classes are Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 1-4 PM.  The final class is October 24, with landscaping by Sadie Gordon from Lendonwood Gardens, located in Grove Oklahoma.

NEW BUISINESS: Crowder Scholarship was discussed.  A committee with Lee House, Bill Andrews and Donna Hobbs, will choose between two candidates, who were recommended by Tracy Allman. 

Festival of wreath: Linda will contact Donna and ask her if she would like to make a wreath.  If she is unable to create one the Master Gardeners will contribute $100.00.

NEW STATE MASTER GARDENER ASSOCIATION: Changes to the MO MG Extension program will let it better serve its members, said David Trinklein, MU Extension horticulturist.  These changes include online training and will launch by August 2012.  To learn more about the Master Gardener program, contact your local MU Extension center of visit www.mg.missouri.edu.

EXTENSION COUNCIL UPDATE: Ron and Jackie Hoyez served on the Newton Co extension council the past 4 years, the maximum time allowed as president and vice president.  The council is looking for three new members to join.  The requirements are that they reside north of HWY 60.  The meetings are every other month on Monday’s at 7:00pm.

The Newton Co extension office approved to create a sign for Master Gardeners and 4H.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:    BLUEBERRY SCHOOL is scheduled for October 7^th and 8^th.

CARNIVAL to benefit 4 H is on October 15, 2011 at the Neosho Fairgrounds.

FALL GARDENING WORKSHOP: October 22, sponsored by Master Gardeners of the Ozarks in Kimberling City.

RAINGARDEN:  Design plans for the Newton County Office provided by Rhonda Headland with the Missouri Department of Conservation were reviewed. Members are encouraged to participate in improving the beds and planting the flowers on Saturday, October 15^th at 9:00AM.  Bill Andrews suggested to rent a small backhoe, Gwen Schroeder will bring amendments for the soil incase they are needed.  Two truckloads of natural mulch will be needed. 

Gwen Schroeder brought herbs to give to members at no charge.

NEXT MEETING: We will meet at the Extension Center on November 1^st.

A motion was M/S/C/ to adjourn the meeting at 7:15 pm.
