The Master Gardeners of Greater Kansas City announce the 11th Annual Spring Seminar---March 3, 2012
Join the Master Gardeners of Greater Kansas City on March 2, 2013, for their 12th Annual Spring Seminar, “Lessons Learned in the Garden.” The seminar consists of twelve sessions which are combined into four tracks of three sessions each—Arts, Sciences, History and Natural Resources—reflecting the fact that the seminar takes place at the new UMKC Student Union and the Linda Hall Library, both near the Plaza in downtown Kansas City.
Participants may choose four sessions from the twelve with topics on such subjects as, but not limited to, native hybrid plants, herbs from the colonial garden, and building structures in the garden. In addition, sessions at the Linda Hall Library will include tours of their rare books featuring magnificent botanical art, and the beautiful arboretum and tree peony collection.
Participants also have the option to take an advanced training session Friday night, March 2, and all day Saturday, March 3. The topics will be announced soon. Master Gardeners will receive advanced training credits for these sessions.
The new student union at UMKC is an official Gold LEED Certified building. It opened in August 2010, and has received several architectural and environmental awards. It features public transportation access, storm water control, natural lighting, skylights, high ceilings, a central stairway and a 6,300-square-foot multi-purpose area that is divisible into four rooms. The project reflects UMKC’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmentally friendly construction.
Use of the Student Union for this year’s seminar is a continued expression of the Master Gardeners’ dedication to environmental concerns in the Kansas City area. In 2011 the Spring Seminar was held at Staley High School, a LEED Silver Certified school. A LEED certification is designed to promote design and construction practices that increase profitability while reducing the negative environmental impact of buildings, and improving occupant health and well-being.
