MINUTES
May 8, 2012
The April meeting of the Hill ‘n Hollow Master Gardeners was held at 6:30 pm at the
Newton County Extension Center on Crowder Campus in Neosho. The meeting was
called to order at 6:32 PM by President Gordon Spencer. There were 32 members
present.
SECRETARY’S REPORT: April minutes were e-mailed to members and read during the
meeting. A motion was M/S/C to approve the April minutes.
TREASURER’S REPORT: The bank balance as of May 8, 2012 was $4,216.82, excluding
outstanding receipts. A motion was M/S/C to accept the treasurer’s report.
OLD BUSINESS
ANNUAL PLANT SALE: Proceeds from the annual plant sale were $1,461.05. This
amount does not include additional sales of leftover plants sold outside the Extension
Office, which total approximately $65.
NEW BUSINESS
HELPING A NEOSHO NATIVE: Beth Person talked with a woman from Neosho at the
plant sale who needs help landscaping the front of her house. This project will
probably require cleaning out old plants and planting new ones. Beth stated that she
planned to send an email with more information.
PINEVILLE GREEN: Jutta McCormick reported that she has perennials to add to this
space and planned to work on it the following weekend.
CLUB HISTORIAN: Rhonda Maring volunteered to fill this position.
IMPROVING THE PLANT SALE: With lower than usual sales, club members discussed
ideas for improving next year’s plant sale, including the following:
• The motion was M/S/C to purchase a new banner for use at plants sales, increasing
our visibility to the public.
• We learned that we could probably borrow a large canopy from Arvest to help shade
shoppers and plants during the sale.
• It was suggested that we move the date for next year’s sale from the first Saturday in
May to the last Saturday in April.
• It was suggested that we produce uniform tags for plants before the sale and a
uniform price list.
ANNOUNCEMENTS & COMMITTEE UPDATES
FISH HATCHERY: Jo McLemore volunteered to be the new chairman for the Neosho Fish
Hatchery Project.
MACDONALD COUNTY HISTORICAL COURTHOUSE: This project is in good shape. The
grounds have been weeded and mulched recently.
NEWTONIA BATTLEFIELD: Cathy Sheehy reported that this project needs some cleanup
and could use the help of a few volunteers. John Hobbs helped with pruning the
orchard trees this spring.
MORSE PARK: Beth Persons will replace Bill Andrews as chairperson for this project. A
work day was planned for Friday, May 11, from 8 AM - noon.
COUNTY FAIRS: Club members were asked to college gift certificates from local
businesses to give away as door prizes at county fairs this summer and to bring the
gift certificates to the June meeting.
JUDGES: John Hobbs is looking for four judges to evaluate flower, flower arranging,
and vegetable entries in the Newton County fair this summer. Club members can
contact him if interested.
4-H ACHIEVEMENT DAY: This will be held on Saturday, May 19, at the Neosho Middle
School. Those interested in helping judge entries at the Achievement Day should
contact Jerry Elliot-Engle at the Extension Office.
YOUTH GARDENING WORKSHOP: This is an Arkansas Master Gardener project in
cooperation with 4-H, which will be held on June 5. Mary Ellen Mitchell will be
teaching through it. A motion was M/S/C to pay for her training out of club funds,
which costs $80.
TOUR OF GILBERT WILDER & SONS: Jutta McCormick volunteered to call about the
dates and times that they are open to see if we can arrange a group tour.
NEXT MEETING: June 5, 2012 at 6:30 PM at the Schroeder’s farm (760 Cowan Ridge
Rd, Powell, MO 65730).
A motion was M/S/C to adjourn the meeting at 7:35 pm.
