MINUTES

February 5, 2013

The February meeting of the Hill ‘n Hollow Master Gardeners was held at 6:30 PM at the Newton County Extension Office. The meeting was called to order at 6:31 PM by President Jutta McCormick with 19 members present.  Jessica Schaer from KODE TV visited as a guest speaker.  She gave an informative presentation, explaining some of the weather terminology we hear on television.  She talked with us about how meteorologists determine their forecasts and predicted that the drought we experienced last year would persist.  Jessica also answered several questions from Master Gardeners about weather patterns and shared her thoughts on global warming.

SECRETARY’S REPORT: December’s minutes were e-mailed to members and posted on the website. Minutes were read during the meeting and corrections were submitted. A motion was M/S/C to approve the corrected December minutes.

TREASURER’S REPORT: The bank balance as of February 5, 2013, was $3,141.96, excluding outstanding receipts. A motion was M/S/C to accept the treasurer’s report.

OLD BUSINESS

None

NEW BUSINESS

ROSE CLINIC: A date for the Rose Clinic with Ron Hoyez was established.  It will take place March 23 at 10 AM at the Hoyez home.

PLANT SALE DATE: A motion was M/S/C to schedule the annual plant sale for April 27, 2013.

PLANT SALE MARKERS: A motion M/S/C to order 4,000 tags to help with consistent labeling and pricing at the plant sale. 

WEBSITE:  A motion M/S/C to renew our website for five years, which allowed us to take advantage of the steepest discount.

COMMITTEE CHAIRS:  Chairpersons for this year’s project committees were established.  At the March meeting, club members will have the opportunity to sign-up as volunteers for the committees.

EXTENSION COUNCIL UPDATE

John Hobbs reported that several Master Gardeners are serving on the extension council this year.  The council also plans to offer a scholarship for a high school student to attend the Master Gardener class this spring.

ANNOUNCEMENTS & REPORTS

  • Mary Ellen Mitchell reported that she will be having her first Master Gardener meeting with 4H students.
  • John Hobbs reported that he is continuing his efforts to recruit a mushroom specialist to speak to the club.
  • It was announced that the Hill ‘n Hollow Master Gardeners Rookie of the Year for 2012 is Jo McLemore.  Thank you, Jo, for your service to the club and your community!

 

NEXT MEETING

The next meeting of the Hill ‘N Hollow Master Gardeners will take place at the Newton County Extension Office on Tuesday, March 5, at 6:30 PM.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:31 PM by President Jutta McCormick.
