Minutes of Master Gardener Meeting
March 4, 2014

 

Meeting called to order by President Karen Scott at 6:30 PM, Newton County Extension Center.
Present were 26 members and 2 guest.

Sue Ludiker made motion to accept February minutes as received via email.  Motion was seconded and motion passed.

Treasurer’s report was given by Sherry McBride.  Balance in the account is $3,705.38.  Jackie Hoyez made motion to accept Treasurer’s report, motion seconded and motion passed.

Karen introduced guest speaker, Jacob Wilson.  Mr. Wilson is the Extension IPM Program Director from Lincoln University.  He presented a power point on Integrated Pest Management including Trap Cropping.

In old business, discussion was continued from the February meeting regarding new officer orientation.  Jackie Hoyez made a motion that in lieu of a January meeting the new officers and previous officers meet.  At this meeting the previous officers would train the new incoming officers of duties and responsibilities.  Lora Burch seconded the motion, motion passed.

Plant sale discussion followed with John Hobbs suggesting we order more plant markers for the plants.  Gordon Spencer made a motion that we order couple more rolls and it was seconded, motion passed.   Sherry McBride will order more markers.  Plant sale location was discussed and will be decided at the April meeting.  Red Carpet will allow use of their lot.  Setup will be at 7 a.m., everyone needs to bring tables.  The tent that was purchased last year will be used for the sale. Jutta is doing advertising for the plant sale. 

Committee Updates:

After school 4-H gardening at Noel School will be taught by Mary Mitchell and Ron Howerton, Conservation Teacher, offered to help her.

There is a request for Master Gardeners to volunteer for the Newton County Extension Committee.  Please contact Jeremy Elliott Engel to volunteer.

National Fish Hatchery requested MG’s to speak at TGIF talks and Linda Simmons is speaking at March 28th meeting on Vermiculture.  Sue is checking to see if they would like to move March 14th meeting to afternoon for Ron Hoyez to speak.

Sandy Robertson, a guest to the meeting, has purchased a Blueberry Farm just South of Joplin.  She and her son attended the meeting to ask for volunteers to help with pruning of the blueberry plants.  Patrick Byers, MU Horticulture specialist will also be on hand to instruct the pruning March 11th at 8:30 a.m.  For more information or to volunteer contact Sandy at 417-499-5752.
